Aloe Vera can easily be gown indoors in pots or out doors in the open. Regardless of where you plant it, it is important that you pay attention to the ventilation and drainage features of the area. For the best results it is important that the soil is at an optimal PH. In preparing Aloe Vera many farmers swear by the 4:4:2 formula which calls for a corresponding ratio the mixture of clay, humus and sand. Once this is done, fertilizers can also then be applied.

The size of the pot you choose will depend on how much Aloe Vera you intend to grow as well as the intended strain. Growing the Aloe Barbadensis is found to take more than a year and a half. Its leaves at that point are measured to be 50-80cm long. This strain of Aloe is found to weigh at least 500grams when grown. If growing this plant is your intent, then you will definitely require a bigger pot. A pot that is at least 30cm in diameter. On the other hand, smaller pots can be used if you are growing the China Aloe Aeborescens which is a smaller plant.

When planting, it is advised that you only load two thirds of the seedling in the pot. The final third can then be added after the plants have taken root. Young Aloe Vera plants should be kept in the shade. As it gets bigger it can then be moved out into the open. Extra protection will however have to be provided during the summer, as the Aloe plant is sensitive to too much light. A temporal change in appearance is not uncommon during the early years of their growth.

Like most plants, Aloe Vera requires water. However, when you are watering them you should pour the water gently. The force of running water can very easily dislodge the roots of the plants from the soil or cause the soil to harden further.

Fertilization
Fertilizer is used to ensure that the Aloe Vera plant gets all the nutrients that it needs. Using organic manure is a good idea. Fertilizer should be applied before watering is done. The use of fertilizers should be done every 30 days.

Collect Leaves:
After Aloe Vera has grown for a year, or has grown at least 12 leaves it is then safe for picking. With the Aloe barbadensis, however, this number is found to be one and a half years. Picking the leaves should be done at the base of the plant without causing harm to the rest of the plant.
